Concentrated Solar Power / Solar Thermal Energy

overview 2 months, 2 weeks ago by JeremyLeach

Most people are familiar with photo voltaic cells, which produce electricity directly as sunlight hits the solar cells. However there is another solution which requires less expensive materials and is well suited for large scale energy generation; concentrated solar power.

Already at work in the largest generator of its kind just outside of Seville in Spain, a concentrated solar power plant uses a synchronised giant array of mirrors to direct and concentrate sunlight onto a thermal power station in a tower.

This solar tower, uses the steam produced to generate electricity which is sold on the grid just like any other means of electricity generation.

This is already producing 100% clean energy in Spain. However, there is another initiative to replicate this technology at many locations in North Africa, leading to grid capable of initially supplying up to 17% of Europe's power needs.

The Foundation working towards this is Desertec, which already has the backing of many international banks and other organisations.
