Naturopathic nutrition - seeking the root, underlying causes of disease

Fresh whole foods
The practice of Naturopathy involves looking for the root cause of disease, and addressing those, rather than simply treating symptoms, or trying to mask them.
Naturopathic nutrition is the application of nutrients / foods (where appropriate) to sustain optimal functioning in order to improve health and wellbeing.
Naturopathic nutrition tends to prescribe the use of diet and wholefoods more than bottled supplements. However these may be used when necessary. The treatment plan is always designed to help the patient's physiology rebalance itself.
For example in the trivial case of a cold, one might prescribe vitamin C. Why - because it activates the immune system to work more effectively.
For a more complicated situation, such as IBS, you may well treat the immediate symptoms, such as cramping with peppermint oil, but this would only be as part of a longer term and more comprehensive plan where you investigate for underlying conditions and lifestyle factors such as stress etc.
When the correct trigger factors have been identified then the appropriate natural treatment therapy would be selected, perhaps using GABA to calm the mind and 5HTP to improve mood.
