Photovoltaic cells - commonly known as solar panels, are probably the most common and well known method for harvesting the sunlight and converting it into electricity.

The production of solar panels worldwide has been doubling every second year, which makes this the fastest growing renewable technology.

Solar panels have been criticised in the past for their inefficiency and cost of manufacture and purchase, but technological progress and demand for comoditisation  have driven huge improvements in these areas.
